RECAP
Based on Task 1  we learned about typeface design ,in this task we are required  to create a typeface, that has the hallmarks of a good typeface:
subtlety or character
presence
legibility and readability.

The letters we will design: “a e t k g r i y m p n ! # , .” Upon completion of the font, we will create a basic A4 size poster displaying the font .

To do
-choose an existing font design Study the font by analysing its anatomical parts.
-sketches, explore a variety of options.
-upon approval begin digitization of the drawings( Adobe Illustrator and later FontLab).

DESIGN PROGRESS

DECONSTRACTION

Firstly we have to choose an existing font design that adheres to the direction that we would like to head in. The font I chose Bauhause 93 Regular the letter I deconstructed letter 'r' and 'p'

SKETCHES
At first, we have to prepare 5 different writing tools with 5 different nibs to draw lines and circles and observe the difference between each nib.

we are required to use 5 different tools Write diagonal, horizontal, vertical and circular lines  in 5 different ways for each tool. Then use all 5 tools Write 'AOTMX' in 5 different ways for each tool.
Select one style from each tool and write "a e t l g r i y m p n" in the selected style

The tools I have choosen:
Gel Pen
Mildliner Brush Super Fine
Artline Supreme  Permanent Marker 5.0 mm
Shanpie  Ultra Fine Point 3.0 mm
Artline Calligraphy Pen 4.0mm

Fig. 1.2 (Week 7: 20.5.23)

I tried to use this 5 tools practice , use different angles and methods to practice drawing lines, circles and writing, and found that my proficiency with different nibs was also different, especially with brush pen. Below is a picture of me practicing with all the tools.

Fig. 1.3 practice (Week 8: 22.5.23)

After practicing, I used each tool to create five different styles.

The following are the five types of fonts I write with Mildliner Brush Super Fine. The brush is the most challenging tool for me, because it is different from the hard pen we commonly use. Its tip is soft and flexible, and it takes a lot of practice to master its rendering level well

Fig. 1.4 sketch (Week 8: 22.5.23)

Then I used a Artline Calligraphy Pen 4.0mm. The most difficult thing for me with this pen is to use its Angle well, because different angles can give different effects, especially using it to write letters containing circles
Fig. 1.5 skecth(Week 8: 22.5.23)

Gel Pen I use most often, the pen that is just right for normal writing, but seems is not  suitable for writing bigger letters ,because it has the thinest tip and is  low readability for those letters.

Fig. 1.6 skecth (Week 8: 22.5.23)

Next, I came in just the right thickness and good control of the Artline Supreme  Permanent Marker, using it to write very smooth and convenient.

Fig. skecth(Week 7: 22.5.23)

Finally, there is the Shanpie  Ultra Fine Point 3.0 mm, which differs from the neutral pen in that it has some rendering effect, the nib is a circular plane, and if you pause a little you have a rounded tip
Fig. 1.7 skecth (Week 8: 22.5.23)

Here is a selection of typeface that I have combined from each of the five tools.

Fig.1.8 skecth (Week 8: 22.5.23)

Among these five typeface, my writing format is incorrect, so I adjusted it according to Mr. Vinod advice and selected the final option for practice.

POSTER DESIGN

We are going to design an a4 size poster using the typeface of our own creation

FEEDBACK
WEEK 8
General Feedback:In this week ,we have to upload our task 3, we are required to use 5 selected tools to write 5 defferent fonts in each tool ,and end up with 5 designs upload.

Specific Feedback:font would be sloppy if I wrote it too fast. It is worth noting that all words should be written in the specified format on the baseline to facilitate the subsequent data. If designing lowercase letters, write lowercase letters on the baseline. If it is uppercase letters, pay attention to distinguish and lowercase letters.
WEEK 9
General Feedback:We will digitize the final choice into a font, and we will choose the handwriting that is most suitable for digitisation. Mr. VInod suggested that we can refer examples of modern typefaces on the Internet before we start digitalisation. Digitisation only allows adjustments that enhance font features.

Specific Feedback:The horizontal of letters E and T angles and lengths should be the same, and the arcs of the letters P and R should be the same

WEEK 10
General Feedback:Keep letters consistent when digitising them.

Specific Feedback:For letter A should adjust its slope and thickness to make it consistent with the other letters

WEEK 11
General Feedback:We browsed each other's blogger and gave feedback.Mr.Vinod also mentioned that punctuation should also be connected to the font design, for example, the stroke on the exclamation point should be the same width as the vertical stroke on the font, and the hashtag should not be too small.

Specific Feedback:
Feedback (Annika):explain what is going on in the progress of task 1 part B
-more further reading can be put

WEEK 12
General Feedback:Make sure that the font size of the poster is consistent, and adjust the kerning to make the whole look more suitable

Specific Feedback: The  letter 'E'  and 'R' should widen the kerning

REFLECTIONS

EXPEREINCE: I spent some time to understand the key points of typeface design, and found that font design needs to pay attention to a lot of details. This task has many interesting aspects, it allows me to integrate my own ideas, personality and style into the font, and let me express unique visual style and emotion through font design, so as to create a unique and personalized font. And learn to notice subtle differences and balances in design.

OBSERVATION:Through the lessons of typeface design, I learned more about the structure of typefaces, how to convert from handwritten typefaces to digital typefaces, and how to use the X-height of letters, baselines, serifs, decorative elements, etc. Knowing these terms helps me better understand the elements of typeface design. Learn how to apply these principles to create beautiful, easy-to-read fonts. Learn to use Fontlab to create and edit fonts. Get to know the tools and features in the software for hands-on font design.

FINDINGS:typeface design should not only maintain the beauty of the font, but also complete its balance, consistency, fluency and uniqueness, so that it can become a good font.

FURTHER READING

Fig.6.1website page of carticle (Week 10: 13.6.23)

I decided to read this article because we have learned about layout in previous courses, but I am not very familiar with it, so I want to have a deeper understanding of book page layout  from this article. The author introduces the main points of layout through various pages as examples.

Fig.6.2classical layout forms(Week 10: 13.6.23)

Fig.6.3hand work setting elements in chapter opener (Week 10: 13.6.23)

Fig.6.4 exsample of book page spreads  (Week 10: 13.6.23)

The importance of book page layout: The article highlights the impact of margins, font choice, and layout design on the book reading experience. By setting proper margins, choosing fonts that are appropriate for the content and audience, and paying attention to the relationship between the text and the paper, you can create a comfortable, easy-to-read page layout.

Adjust of details: The author pays attention to detail when designing the pages of the book. He manually adjusts letter spacing, letter size, and the position of chapter elements to ensure balance and harmony between the various elements on the page. This reminds us to pay attention to every detail in book design to ensure the best visual effects and reading experience.

The reader's Feeling : Successful book design needs to consider the reader's needs and interaction with the book as a physical object. Understanding how readers interact with books and the physical properties of books can help us make better design decisions to provide an enjoyable reading experience.

summary :the author provided his own insights and guidance on page layout to help me understand how to design a successful book, and it also emphasized the importance of details. These ideas allow me to apply them to my own design, and the examples of images  in the article are inserted to match the text, showing specific page layouts and design effects.,those pictures help me understand the author's description better.
