Task 3 : Design
Recap
In this Task , We will produce a work of design , inspired/influenced by the one we had analysed,
apply  knowledge of design principles we have learnd .

Requirements:
- 3-5 sketches (manual/digital)
- final design in A4 size, JPEG
- a rationale, in about 150-200 words, explaining/defending the decisions made in design.

Moodboard

These two works are the works of hanny banany, a designer from Pinterest. She uses bright and comfortable color matching and rich collage elements to inspire me to show the charm and diversity of nature through color matching.

This work inspired me to focus on the part of "life", which shows the harmonious coexistence of plants and animals in nature. The forest uses dark colors to set off the animals painted in white, giving this art work a focus point.

UNSDG GOALS:

In this task I focus on the topic related to goal 15- Life on land - combat desertification.

The key elements of the goal include halting land degradation, preventing desertification, protecting forests, restoring land ecosystems and promoting sustainable land use.

Measures such as afforestation, soil and water conservation, land rehabilitation and sustainable agricultural practices can effectively combat desertification and protect and restore the health of land ecosystems. This helps to preserve biodiversity, protect vegetation cover, and reduce drought and soil erosion.

Sketches

Based on the above inspiration and reference, I made the first five sketches.

In the first sketch, I used the tree trunk as an element to create visual movement, adding natural elements on the top and inside the tree trunk, connecting the city on the bottom, and the title and slogan on the upper left corner, using the principles of contrast, movement ,words and image.

The second uses an endangered species, the Tapirus indicus, to draw its former living environment and city by using its color segmentation, and the main purpose is to appeal to people to protect the ecological environment and rational development of rare species.

The third sketch uses visual movement effects to draw animals and humans from blue mountains to melting glaciers, with the main idea of calling for the protection of glaciers and land life.

The fourth sketch is to express the slogen of "let the earth breathe", through a layer of road to block the rain into the land, causing the plants below to wither and land cracked, calling on people to develop the city reasonably, and emphasizing that people should pay attention to the surface life, the design principles used include emphasis, contrast and words and images.

The last idea that I finally used is to make 3D gift cards through physical objects by comparing the forest on the left with the desert on the right. The main purpose is to popularize people's understanding of land desertification and publicize the prevention of land desertification. The design principles used include words and images, contrast and emphasis.

Final Sketch

From the artwork I selected in Task 1 inspired me to use its design principles - contrast, expressed through the distinction of colors and elements.

After asking Mr. zeon for his advice. Mr. zeon gave me feedback that the work should have a focused and meaning, so I added a lake in the middle based on the original sketch, as well as animals from the forest and desert and showed the dry texture of the land against the forest grass on the left.

Life on Desert

I searched for all the plants and animals that are not common and that I have not seen, so that I can make art works.

Final outcome

Title : Save Our Land From Desertation
Design Principles:
Contrast
Hirachy
Emphasis
Word and image

Rationale:
This 3D gift card highlights the importance of land ecosystems by contrasting forest and desert elements. By contrasting the exuberance of the forest with the desolation of the desert, the significance of Goal 15 of the United Nations is underlined, namely, the protection and restoration of land ecosystems. The design uses a emphasis of elements and a coordinated layout of words and images, and hirachy to create different environmental landscapes, leading the viewer to focus on the urgency of combating desertification. The overall design conforms to the visual appeal and information transmission effect, arousing people's thinking and action on environmental protection.
This work can remind us of the great differences between ecosystems and environmental conditions in different parts of the earth. By contrasting forests and deserts, we can think about the impact of human activities on land and how we can take action to protect and restore threatened land ecosystems. In addition, this work can also call attention to environmental issues such as global climate change and biodiversity loss, and inspire us to work towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

Feedback
Week 6
Feedback : The idea of a 3D gift card is good, but the sketch is not perfect, the art work needs to have focus and meaning

Week 7
Feedback : Can have a Boomerang video showing the gift card open and close in final outcome.

Reflections

Experience : I think it's the most challenging task I've ever done, but I'm very interested in it. From my initial sketch and imagination, I decided to manually paint all the elements in the design with watercolor, which was not a simple thing for me. I made many attempts, including how to make the elements present three-dimensional effects, how to create a sense of hierarchy, etc. In the process, I was very patient and consumed a lot of time, but the final result made me feel satisfied and excited. I think these trials made me grow up a lot.

Observation : During the production process, I observed that it is not easy to make a contrast in the world. It is not only the difference of elements and colors, but all elements need to echo each other, for example, a tree corresponds to a cactus to make a contrast. In order to achieve a visual contrast effect in the work, I tried many colors and plants. I painted many different cacti and shrubs of many colors, and then chose the best elements for contrast.

findings : In the process of making mountains,  I used thick and hard cardboard from the very beginning, but found it could not stand up at all. Because it was too thick, I chose to change it to ordinary soft a4 paper. And also the soft paper can't use on watercolor painting, because the water makes paper uneven , so understanding the material of paper and using it properly is also the key.

Furthur Reading

I continued reading the same book I hadn't finished in the past two weeks.

Layout Essentials Revised and Updated: 100Design Principles for Using Grids.

Author:Tondreau, B. (2019).
 MA: Rockport Publishers. (eBook)

Isolation of Elements: Grids can be used to isolate different elements like type and images in separate columns or zones.

Integration of Type and Image
- Most grids integrate type and image effectively to provide clarity and emphasis on information.

Emphasis on Text
-Text can be emphasized by placing it on a separate page, allowing for clear focus.

Color Definition of Space
Color helps to define space and organize elements within a layout, providing both visual appeal and functionality.

Consideration of Audience
- When using colors, it's essential to consider the audience as saturated colors attract attention, while desaturated colors offer a more subtle support.

Production Note on Color
Understanding the difference between on-screen and printed color is crucial for effective color reproduction in traditional printing methods.

Communication through Space
- Effective use of space communicates volumes, allowing for better readability and comprehension of text.

Rhythm and Flow
- Layouts should have a clear flow to tell a story effectively, balancing mechanical arrangement with lyrical movement.

Typography and Design
Typography plays a crucial role in design, affecting readability and overall aesthetic appeal.

Importance of Margins
- Ample margins are essential, especially in projects with multiple pages, to prevent text from being lost in binding.

Proportions and Golden Ratio
Designers should consider proportions carefully, including the golden ratio, to achieve visually appealing layouts
